Shinnosuke Ikehata

Description
Shinnosuke Ikehata is a Japanese singer, actor, and voice actor born on August 8, 1952 in Osaka, Japan. He is also widely known by his stage name Peter, which he adopted at the age of sixteen, inspired by Peter Pan due to his distinctive style of dress and dance. Ikehata comes from a traditional Japanese dance family, as his father is the head of the Yoshimura school and a Living National Treasure; he himself began performing on stage at the age of three.

Ikehata's career began in the late 1960s with a leading role in Toshio Matsumoto's experimental film Funeral Parade of Roses in 1969, a performance that brought him significant attention. The same year, he launched a music career and won the Japan Record Award for Best New Artist for his song "Yoru to Asa no Aida ni". As an actor, he has appeared in numerous films, including a notable role as Kyoami in Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed 1985 epic Ran. Throughout his long career, he has often played characters that transcend gender, a reflection of his androgynous appearance and public persona.

In the field of voice acting, Ikehata is perhaps best known to international audiences for providing the voice of the Shinigami Rem in the 2006 live-action film Death Note: The Last Name. Beyond this prominent role, he has an extensive filmography in video games, particularly in the Drakengard series. He voiced the protagonist Caim and an angel in the first Drakengard in 2003, roles he reprised in the 2005 sequel Drakengard 2. He also voiced the character Michael in Drakengard 3 in 2013. In 2010, he provided the voice for Grimoire Weiss in the action role-playing game Nier. Other video game credits include roles in Yakuza: Dead Souls in 2011 and the television series Garo: Makai Senki in 2012.

Ikehata has continued to work as a television actor, appearing in the 2015 TBS drama Shitamachi Rocket and its 2018 sequel as the lawyer Kyokichi Nakakawa, as well as in the 2024 NHK morning drama Omusubi as a bar owner. His enduring career in entertainment and his status as a public figure who has lived openly and authentically have made him a well-known personality in Japan.
