Min-Woo Hyung

Description
Min-Woo Hyung, also known as Hyung Min-woo, is a South Korean manhwa artist and writer born in 1974 in Seoul. His career began in the early 1990s, with his debut as a published creator occurring in 1994 with a series focused on judo titled The Champion of Judo, which was serialized in the monthly magazine Champ.

Hyung is best known as the original creator of the manhwa series Priest. He began publishing Priest in July 1998 in Comic Champ magazine. The series achieved significant international recognition and was translated into multiple languages, including English, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese, gaining a global readership. Priest is set in a dark, alternate reality that blends a Western frontier aesthetic with supernatural horror, featuring a cursed protagonist named Ivan Isaacs who hunts vampires and demons. In 1999, Hyung received the Newcomer Award in the publishing division of the Grand Korea Comics Culture Awards for his work on Priest.

The success of Priest led to several adaptations, marking a significant milestone in Hyungs career and in the international reception of Korean manhwa. A feature film adaptation titled Priest was released in 2011, starring Paul Bettany and Maggie Q. This production was notable for being the first Hollywood film adapted from a Korean manhwa, demonstrating the cross-cultural appeal of Hyungs work. The film retained core elements of his original narrative, including a dystopian world shaped by a war between humans and vampires and a central plot involving a priests quest to rescue a kidnapped relative.

Beyond Priest, Hyung has created other notable manhwa titles, including Ghostface, Justice N Mercy, and Mushin War. His artistic identity is characterized by a fusion of distinct genres, often combining the visual and narrative structures of the Western genre with martial arts action, horror, and dark fantasy. This distinctive blend of influences contributed to the unique atmosphere of his work and its successful transition to a mainstream cinematic format. Through the international publication and Hollywood adaptation of Priest, Min-Woo Hyung has played a key role in bringing Korean manhwa to a wider global audience and establishing its presence alongside more widely recognized comic traditions.
