Isa Barzizza was an Italian actress and voice artist who played a significant role in the world of anime dubbing, particularly in her native Italy. Born in Sanremo on November 22, 1929, Barzizza was initially a renowned stage and film actress, having started her professional career as a teenager. She was discovered by the comedian Erminio Macario in 1946 and later worked extensively with the legendary Italian comic Totò, appearing in numerous popular comedies throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1960, following the death of her husband, the screenwriter and director Carlo Alberto Chiesa, she shifted her focus away from performing on screen and stage to establish a dubbing and production company called Citiemme.

As a voice actor, Barzizza is most famously associated with the classic anime series The Rose of Versailles, known in Italian as Lady Oscar. Within this series, she provided the Italian voice for Marguerite de Jarjayes, the mother of the protagonist Oscar François de Jarjayes. Her involvement with Lady Oscar, however, extended far beyond a single voice role. Barzizza served as the dubbing director for the Italian version of both the animated series and the 1979 live-action film. Furthermore, she lent her voice to another character in the same production, the Signora Valois, further cementing her integral role in bringing the series to Italian audiences.

Beyond Lady Oscar, Barzizza was responsible for directing the Italian dubbing for several other beloved animated series. Her directing credits include the classic series Candy Candy, Belle and Sebastian, Hello! Spank, The Jetsons (known as I Pronipoti), and Barbapapà. In addition to her duties as a director, she also performed as a voice actor for these shows. For instance, in the Italian version of Candy Candy, she voiced several characters, including the head nurse at St. Joseph, Margot, and Signora Marlowe.

Isa Barzizza passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 93 in Palau, Sardinia. Her legacy in the world of anime is defined not only by the specific characters she voiced but also by her behind-the-scenes work as a dubbing director. Through her company and her leadership on numerous dubbing projects, she made a foundational contribution to the localization of anime in Italy, helping to introduce classic series to a new generation of viewers.
