Shōji Ōki

Description
Shōji Ōki, also known as Shôji Ôki, was a Japanese actor and voice artist born on September 27, 1936, in Numazu, Shizuoka, Japan. He embarked on his professional journey after graduating from Numazu Higashi High School and subsequently joining the seventh class of the theatre company Haiyuza's training school. His classmates during this period included several notable actors. Later in his career, he was affiliated with the theatrical troupe Seinenza.

His career spanned both live-action film and voice acting for animation. While he appeared in numerous movies and television dramas from the late 1950s onward, he became especially known to anime audiences for his distinctive voice work in the 1980s. In the realm of anime, he is perhaps best remembered for his role as Drake Luft, the ambitious lord of Castle Luft, in the 1983 mecha fantasy series Aura Battler Dunbine. That same year, he also provided the voice for the character of the Bank Robber in the live-action drama Sukeban Deka, a role that crossed over between his on-screen and voice work.

Beyond these signature roles, his other significant voice acting credits include the character Gultorre, a Dinosaur Army marshal, in the mecha anime Kikou Senki Dragonar from 1987. He also lent his voice to the character Gennon in the 1997 adaptation of Berserk. His work extended into video games as well, as he was part of the Japanese voice cast for the 2006 title Another Century's Episode 2.

Throughout his long career, Ōki worked extensively as a character actor, often playing authoritative, villainous, or imposing figures. He was known to the public both as a face in many classic Japanese films, including notable appearances in Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Red Beard, and as a voice in popular anime. Shōji Ōki died on November 20, 2009, at the age of 73.
