Jay Hopper

Description
Jay Hopper is an English voice actor known for his work on the English-language dubbed versions of several anime series and films, primarily those in the Tenchi Muyo! franchise. His most notable roles came during the initial English productions of the franchise in the 1990s.

Hopper's career is most defined by his portrayal of two key, older male characters in the Tenchi Muyo! universe. He was the first English voice actor for Katsuhito Masaki, the wise grandfather and Shinto priest who guides the protagonist Tenchi. Hopper voiced Katsuhito Masaki in the original Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, the special Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival, and the alternate continuity retelling Tenchi Universe. In these same productions, Hopper also provided the voice for Nobuyuki Masaki, Tenchi's well-meaning but irresponsible and perverted father. He reprised the role of Nobuyuki Masaki in the Tenchi Universe series as well. This dual role extended to the feature film Tenchi Muyo! in Love, where Hopper voiced both characters again.

Hopper's work on the Tenchi Muyo! franchise established him as part of the early English voice cast for the series. The character Katsuhito Masaki was originally voiced in Japanese by Takeshi Aono, while Nobuyuki Masaki was also voiced by Takeshi Aono in Japanese. In later installments of the franchise, such as Tenchi in Tokyo and the third OVA series, Hopper was replaced in both roles by voice actor Bob Papenbrook.
