David Gray
Description
David Gray is a pseudonym for the American actor James Marsters, who used this alias for his work in the English dub of the Dragon Ball franchise. The name was created for the role of Zamasu, a primary antagonist introduced in the Dragon Ball Super anime series. Marsters publicly confirmed at Fan Expo Canada in October 2021 that he was the voice behind the David Gray credit, a decision he made alongside Dragon Ball Super voice director Christopher Sabat. As a fan of the series, Marsters chose to perform the role entirely for free. His motivation for taking on the part was to redeem himself with the Dragon Ball community following his appearance as Piccolo in the critically panned 2009 live-action film, Dragon Ball: Evolution.
Under the name David Gray, Marsters provides the voice for both Zamasu and his counterpart, Future Zamasu, in the Funimation English dub of Dragon Ball Super. His performance extended beyond the television series to several video game adaptations. He is credited as David Gray for the character in titles such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball Legends, Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. For the fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ, he used a different alias, Sam Majesters.
The use of the David Gray pseudonym allowed Marsters, a well-known actor for his live-action roles in series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, to voice a major anime character without his name attached to the project initially. This casting created a notable recurring collaboration with the Funimation voice acting team, including Christopher Sabat and Sean Schemmel, who suggested he take the role. The decision to work under a pseudonym and without payment stands as a unique achievement within the voice acting community, representing a personal gesture of goodwill toward a franchise he wanted to honor.
