Yuumikan
Description
Yuumikan is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the BOFURI light novel series. The author's name is often written in Japanese as 夕蜜柑. Yuumikan began writing the story that would become BOFURI in 2016 as a web novel on the user-generated content site Shōsetsuka ni Narō. This initial online serialization proved successful and led to the series being acquired for print publication. The first light novel volume was released in September 2017 under the Kadokawa Books imprint by Fujimi Shobo, featuring illustrations by the artist Koin. The series has since continued with the release of numerous subsequent volumes.
The story, known for its lengthy full title "Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu," focuses on a novice gamer named Kaede Honjō, who plays as her avatar Maple in a virtual reality game. To avoid pain, she invests all her in-game stats into defense, an unconventional strategy that unexpectedly turns her into an overwhelmingly powerful player due to a series of fortunate discoveries and unique skills. The series is noted for its lighthearted, comedic tone and its focus on fun, unconventional gameplay mechanics.
Based on the original light novels, the franchise expanded into other media. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Jirō Oimoto, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine in May 2018. An anime television series adaptation produced by Silver Link premiered in January 2020, followed by a second season that aired from January to April 2023. Yuumikan is credited as the original creator for both the manga and anime adaptations.
The origin of the series is connected to the author's creative approach. After a previous work was discontinued, Yuumikan aimed to write a story with a focus on creating an overpowered protagonist and prioritizing entertainment and a sense of ease over strict realism. This goal is reflected in the series' popularity, with its blend of humor, heartwarming moments, and the main character's inventive gameplay. The success of the series, which has sold over 1.6 million copies and spawned a popular multimedia franchise, has established Yuumikan as a notable creator in the light novel and anime industry.
