Kotoba Inoya

Description
Kotoba Inoya is a Japanese manga artist born on November 18, 1992, in Fukuroi, Shizuoka Prefecture. His professional career began when his short one-shot manga Hoshi ni Negai wo, or Wish Upon a Star, was published in January 2016. The work earned a Special Selection award in the 95th edition of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine Newcomer Manga Award.

Inoya is best known as the creator of Smile Down the Runway, also known as Runway de Waratte. This shōnen manga, which he wrote and illustrated, was his first serialized work. It was published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from May 31, 2017, to July 14, 2021, and was compiled into a total of twenty-two tankōbon volumes. The story follows two teenagers, Chiyuki Fujito and Ikuto Tsumura, who pursue their dreams in the competitive fashion industry despite facing significant obstacles. Chiyuki aspires to be a model but is considered too short at 158 centimeters, while Ikuto aims to become a fashion designer but must overcome his family's poverty.

The success of the manga led to a twelve-episode anime television adaptation produced by the studio Ezo'la. The series was directed by Nobuyoshi Nagayama, with scripts by Tōko Machida, and aired from January 10 to March 27, 2020, on the Animeism programming block. A novel adaptation titled Smile Down the Runway: The 158cm Model Heads to Paris Fashion Week!, written by Yūki Arisawa, was published by Kodansha under their KK Bunko imprint on April 15, 2020.

Following the conclusion of Smile Down the Runway, Inoya began new projects. In October 2024, he collaborated with artist Yuu Okino to launch the manga Gakuen Idolmaster Gold Rush in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion. For this series, Inoya is credited with the story and composition while Okino handles the artwork. The manga is based on the Gakuen Idolm@ster game app. In May 2025, Inoya launched another new series in the same magazine titled Sonata wa Ittai Dare Nanda, which is described as a dramatic fantasy. The story follows a hero who loses all his memories after defeating a dark lord. By December 2025, the manga was reported to be entering its climax.

Inoya's work is characterized by dramatic, character-driven narratives centered on pursuing dreams against difficult odds. Smile Down the Runway stands as his most significant contribution to the industry, notable for its focused exploration of the fashion world, a setting not commonly depicted in shōnen manga. In his personal life, Inoya announced his marriage to voice actress Ayaka Suwa on January 1, 2023. Suwa had previously voiced the character Fumiyo Niinuma in the anime adaptation of Smile Down the Runway.
