Arne Elsholtz

Description
Arne Elsholtz was a German actor, voice actor, dialogue writer, and dubbing director who became one of the most recognized and prolific voice talents in the German-speaking entertainment industry. Born on August 14, 1944, in Pritzwalk, Germany, he began his career as a performer, training as an actor in Berlin and appearing on stage. His work in dubbing began in 1964, and over the following decades, he established himself as a leading figure in the field, providing German voices for numerous international film stars. In addition to voice acting, Elsholtz was highly influential as a dubbing director and dialogue writer, overseeing German-language adaptations of major film franchises.

For audiences of animated and anime productions, Arne Elsholtz is particularly recognized for his role as Jesse Blue in the classic 1980s anime series Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. This series, known in German as Saber Rider und die Starsheriffs, featured Elsholtz as the voice of the character Jesse Blue across all 52 episodes of its original run. The role is a notable example of his work in genre animation. His association with the series was so strong that the German dub famously included a self-referential line where a character remarks that Jesse Blue is as important as an Arne on an Elsholtz, acknowledging the actor's contribution.

Beyond Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Elsholtz had several other significant roles in animated features and series. He provided the German voice of Manny, the woolly mammoth, in the first four films of the Ice Age franchise, including Ice Age: The Meltdown, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. He also voiced the character Jimbo Kern in the German dub of the adult animated series South Park for its early seasons. In Disney animation, he was the German voice of Hades, the fast-talking god of the underworld, in the 1997 film Hercules and in the subsequent animated television series based on the film.

Elsholtz's career was marked by long-standing professional collaborations, although his most famous recurring work was with specific Hollywood actors rather than individual directors or studios. He was the standard German dubbing voice for several major stars for decades, including Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Kevin Kline, and Jeff Goldblum. He voiced Tom Hanks in his Oscar-winning performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, Bill Murray in films like Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day, and Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park and Independence Day. This consistency made his voice a familiar and trusted presence in German cinemas and on television.

As a dubbing director and dialogue writer, Arne Elsholtz was responsible for the German adaptations of numerous acclaimed films and television series. His work behind the scenes included directing the German dubs for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He also directed the German dialogue for the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in which he also voiced the character of Geoffrey Butler. His contributions to the German versions of Monty Python films were also notable for their creative adaptation of the original comedy scripts.

Arne Elsholtz received recognition for his work in the dubbing industry. In 2003, he was awarded a prize for his work as a voice actor by the city of Lippstadt. He continued to work actively in his profession for over five decades. Arne Elsholtz passed away on April 26, 2016, in Berlin at the age of 71, leaving behind a substantial legacy as one of the most important voices in German dubbing history.
