Casey Kasem

Description
Casey Kasem, born Kemal Amin Kasem on April 27, 1932, was an American radio personality and voice actor whose work included several notable roles in English-dubbed anime and anime-influenced productions. His career in voice acting spanned from the late 1960s until the late 2000s.

One of Kasem's significant roles in the realm of anime was as the voice of Mark, the leader of the G-Force team, in the English-language adaptation of the 1972 Japanese anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. This adaptation, produced by Sandy Frank Entertainment, was titled Battle of the Planets and featured Kasem in the lead role of the character originally known as Ken Washio. In this series, he voiced the headstrong and courageous pilot of the team's Phoenix aircraft. An episode guide notes that Kasem also used his famous "radio voice" to voice a flight controller in at least one episode of the series.

Beyond Gatchaman, Kasem was a prolific voice actor in the 1980s animated series The Transformers. His work on this show included voicing several characters, most notably the Autobots Bluestreak and Cliffjumper. He also provided the voice for the Autobots' supercomputer, Teletraan I, and the mad scientist Dr. Archeville. Kasem departed from The Transformers during its third season. His exit was reportedly due to his objection to the episode "Thief in the Night" which featured a stereotypical depiction of an Arab character, a matter of personal significance given his Lebanese Druze heritage.

While Kasem is most widely recognized as the original voice of Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the long-running Scooby-Doo franchise, his career included other roles that intersect with the broader world of animation and voice-over work often associated with anime fans. He voiced Robin in various DC Comics cartoons, including The Batman/Superman Hour and Super Friends, and played Alexander Cabot III in Josie and the Pussycats.

Kasem's professional background as a renowned radio disc jockey and the host of American Top 40 informed his vocal delivery and contributed to his distinctive style as a voice actor. He continued to work in animation for decades, reprising his role as Shaggy in numerous films and series until 2009. Casey Kasem passed away on June 15, 2014.
