Jaap Stobbe, born Jacob Stobbe in The Hague, Netherlands on November 7, 1936, was a Dutch actor, comedian, and clown whose career included notable work as a voice actor for animated series. He passed away in Amsterdam on February 21, 2020, at the age of 83. While Stobbe was a familiar face on Dutch television, he reached a significant portion of his audience through his voice, particularly in the early 1980s when the popularity of Japanese anime was rising in the West. His most prominent role in this genre came from the Dutch dub of the classic science fiction anime series Battle of the Planets. Known in Dutch as Strijd der Planeten, the series was a localized adaptation of the original Japanese anime Kagaku ninja tai Gatchaman. Within this ensemble of young heroes, Stobbe provided the voice for the character Jason, known in the original Japanese version as Joe Asakura. Stobbe voiced Jason for the Dutch broadcast, which ran from 1980 to 1981. Beyond his work in Japanese anime, Stobbe had a prolific career contributing to other voice dubs for children's television. His voice credits include roles in popular international animated series such as Ducktales, where he voiced the character Bolle boef, and The Wuzzles, where he voiced Aperinho. He also contributed voice work to the Dutch version of Fraggle Rock, known as Freggels, and the anime series Alleen op de wereld (Nobody's Boy: Remi). On screen, Stobbe was widely recognized for his role as the villainous Plaaggeest in the 1978 children's series Bassie & Adriaan: De Plaaggeest, a role for which he also assisted with production. He held a main role as Hugo in the youth series De Poppenkraam from 1980 to 1985 and was the first actor to portray the character Lowietje in the popular television series Baantjer. His career, active from 1970 to 1998, was marked by a wide range of supporting and guest roles in Dutch and German television productions. In recognition of a dispute over payment for his work, Stobbe was posthumously given a legal ruling in his favor in November 2020.
