He graduated with a degree in philosophy from the University of Nottingham and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before gaining recognition for his live-action roles in the Divergent film series and the television series The White Lotus.

In the realm of animation, James is best known for his role as Hector in the Netflix animated series Castlevania. He voiced the character across multiple seasons, including the second, third, and fourth seasons, which aired between 2018 and 2021. Hector is a Devil Forgemaster, a complex figure who serves as a reluctant antagonist and later a supporting protagonist in the series.
