Chiaki Kisaki

Description
Chiaki Kisaki is a Japanese novelist and manga original creator from Fukuoka Prefecture. After graduating from university, Kisaki worked a series of part-time jobs, as a freelancer, and as a contract employee before embarking on a writing career. The debut as a published novelist came in 2014 with the work Kajūmachi Halloween Night, which won the Special Prize in the Girls Novels category of the 15th Entame Grand Prize.

Kisaki is best known as the author of the light novel series Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, which is the creative foundation for the subsequent anime and manga adaptations. The series, illustrated by Hako Ichiiro, began publication on February 25, 2014, through ASCII Media Works under their Media Works Bunko imprint. Prior to its publication, the novel won the Grand Prize in the 20th annual Dengeki Novel Awards. The light novel series has released fourteen volumes as of May 2024. The story is set in the Hakata ward of Fukuoka City, a location which appears peaceful but is actually home to a high concentration of underworld professionals including hitmen, detectives, informants, and torturers, with a rumored killer of killers operating among them.

Beyond the original light novels, the world of Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens has been adapted into multiple formats. A manga adaptation illustrated by Kisara Akino was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine from July 2016 to May 2017, compiled into two volumes. A second manga series, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens Dai 2-Shō, illustrated by Chiako Nagaoka, ran in the same magazine from August 2017 to December 2018, also collected in two volumes. A twelve-episode anime television adaptation produced by the studio Satelight and directed by Kenji Yasuda aired from January 12, 2018, to March 30, 2018. Kisaki is credited as the creator of the original work for the anime series.

Kisaki has written other novel series and manga projects. These include the DOPE Mayaku Torishimari-bu Tokusōka novel, published in August 2022 with illustrations by Tomio Ogata, which is set in a futuristic Japan overrun by a dangerous drug. This work is scheduled to receive a manga adaptation illustrated by Makimayo beginning July 15, 2025, as well as a live-action television adaptation premiering on July 4, 2025, on the TBS channel in Japan. Other publications include the light novel series Noraneko City, the Money Trap novels, the Bishōnen series Bukyō Danshi, and the crossover novel Durarara!! × Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, which was produced in collaboration with Ryohgo Narita, the creator of Durarara!!. Kisaki is also the original creator of the ongoing manga series CHANGE UP!!. The recurring thematic focus across these works is often urban crime, underworld activity, and psychological drama.
