Makoto Hoshino is a Japanese manga artist and anime director. As a manga creator, Hoshino is best known as the writer and illustrator of the fantasy series The Tale of Outcasts, known in Japanese as Nokemono-tachi no Yoru. This manga was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from August 2019 to April 2021, and its chapters were compiled into eight tankobon volumes. The series is licensed for an English-language release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment. In addition to the original series, Hoshino is also the author of a sequel manga titled The Tale of Outcasts: The Flame Knight.

The Tale of Outcasts was adapted into an anime television series produced by the studio Ashi Productions, which aired from January to April 2023. For this anime adaptation, Hoshino is credited with the original work.

Beyond this notable manga, Makoto Hoshino has an extensive career as a director in the anime industry. Directing credits include television series such as Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love Revolutions in 2015, Damepri Anime Caravan in 2018, King's Raid: Successors of the Will in 2020, Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside in 2021, and The Little Lies We All Tell in 2022. Hoshino also served as the chief director for the second season of Banished from the Hero's Party. This dual role as both a creator of original manga and a director of anime adaptations, including the adaptation of one's own work, demonstrates a multifaceted presence in the Japanese animation and publishing industries.
