Jan Single

Description
Jan Single was a German voice actor known for his work in dubbing international films and television series, including Japanese anime, for the German-language market. His career included numerous roles in live-action productions, but he is recognized within the anime community for providing the German-dubbed voice for several characters in anime series.

Born in Hamburg in 1971, Single pursued formal acting training at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main. Before transitioning into voice work, he performed as a stage actor for three years at the Osnabrück Municipal Theatres and for four years at the National Theatre Mannheim. In addition to his voice acting for animation and live-action dubbing, he was also a narrator for radio dramas with German broadcasters such as WDR, BR, and HR, and became a speaker for Deutschlandradio Kultur starting in June 2009. He passed away on May 18, 2019, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

As an anime voice actor, Jan Single's most prominent role was providing the German dub voice for Kasen Kanesada in the series Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, which aired in 2016. In the original Japanese version, the character is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa. Kasen Kanesada is an anthropomorphized sword with a cultured personality, though he has a tendency to rely on physical strength, and Single expressed his goal as a voice actor to highlight the character's graceful and elegant side while also portraying the contrast between his domestic and fighting personas.

Beyond his work on Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Single dubbed several other notable anime roles for German audiences. In 2015, he voiced the character Bernard in Maria the Virgin Witch, a role originally performed by Takahiro Sakurai. The same year, he voiced Don in Concrete Revolutio, originally voiced by Kenta Miyake. In 2016, he dubbed the role of Howard Marks in Joker Game, originally voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka. His later anime dubbing work included the role of Toshio Tanabe in SWORDGAI The Animation in 2018, originally voiced by Masaaki Yano.

In addition to his anime roles, his voice acting career included dubbing characters in numerous popular American and international live-action series, such as Lucifer, Empire, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Navy CIS, and 2 Broke Girls.
