Michael Brennicke

Description
Michael Brennicke was a German actor, voice actor, and dialogue writer known for his deep, authoritative voice. He was born in Munich, Germany, on October 5, 1949, and passed away in the same city on March 25, 2019. His career in the entertainment industry spanned several decades, during which he became a familiar presence in both live-action television and the world of dubbing. He was the son of actors Helmut Brennicke and Rosemarie Lang and initially pursued studies in German literature, musicology, and psychology before committing fully to acting.

While Brennicke was an accomplished on-screen actor with appearances in popular German television series such as Tatort and Derrick, his legacy is most strongly tied to his voice work. He served as the long-time off-screen narrator for the German television program Aktenzeichen XY... ungelöst and was the station voice for the private channel kabel eins. His versatile voice made him a sought-after dubbing artist, and he became the standard German voice for several prominent international actors, including Chevy Chase and Dustin Hoffman.

In the specific field of anime and animated series, Michael Brennicke contributed several notable voice performances. One of his most recognized roles in anime is providing the German voice for Sakazuki, also known by his alias Akainu, in the One Piece franchise. He voiced the character in the feature film One Piece Film Gold. In addition to the film, his work as Sakazuki extended to other installments in the series, including the television special One Piece: Episode of Sabo and later episodes of the main One Piece anime series. Earlier in his career, from 1981 to 1982, he also lent his voice to the character of Gorgo the eagle in the German dub of the classic animated series Nils Holgersson.

Beyond performing, Brennicke was also active behind the scenes as a dialogue writer and dubbing director. He wrote the German dialogue for major films such as James Bond Octopussy and Interview with a Vampire, and directed German adaptations of popular television series like Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis. His skilled work on the German version of Battlestar Galactica earned him the Synchron-Zuhörerpreis (The Silhouette) in 2009 in the category of Best Dialogue Book of a Series.
