Sei Hatsuno

Description
Sei Hatsuno is a Japanese writer born in 1973 in Shimizu city, Shizuoka, Japan. He began his career as a novelist after winning the Yokomizo Seishi Mystery Prize in 2002 for his debut work Mizu no Tokei (Water Clock), an annual literary award for unpublished mystery novels. As a student at Hosei University, he was deeply influenced by honkaku, or orthodox, mystery novels, particularly The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji and the works of Soji Shimada. He is a member of the Honkaku Mystery Writers Club of Japan and is known for writing within the mystery and thriller genres.

Hatsuno is best known as the creator of the Haruchika series, also known as the Haruta & Chika series. This is a collection of mystery novels published by Kadokawa Shoten, with the first volume released in October 2008. Each book in the series is composed of several interconnected short stories. The main titles in the series include Taishutsu Gēmu (Exit Game), Hatsukoi Somurie (First Love Sommelier), Kūsō Orugan (Fantasy Organ), Sennen Jurietto (Thousand-year Juliet), and Wakusei Karon (Planet Karon). Beyond the Haruchika series, his other published novels include Shikkoku no Ōji, Nibun no Ichi no Kishi, Towairaito Myūjiamu, Watashi no Nōma Jīn, Mukō-gawa no Yūen, and PCP -Perfect Crime Party-, the last of which is based on a fictional manga series from the story Bakuman.

The Haruchika series has been adapted into multiple formats, establishing Hatsuno as a notable original creator within the anime and manga industry. A manga adaptation illustrated by Būta began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Shōnen Ace in December 2015. An anime television series adaptation titled Haruchika: Haruta & Chika was produced by the studio P.A.Works and premiered in Japan in January 2016. A live-action film adaptation of the same name was released in March 2017. Across these productions, Hatsuno is consistently credited as the original creator and author of the source novels.

As a writer, Hatsuno identifies as an avid fan of mystery novelists such as Seishi Yokomizo and Jeffrey Archer, and his work is characterized by the honkaku mystery tradition, which emphasizes fair-play logic and puzzle-like plotting. His contributions to the genre have been recognized with nominations for the Mystery Writers of Japan Award for Best Short Story in 2008 for Taishutsu Gēmu and for Best Novel in 2013 for Sennen Jurietto. Through the multimedia expansion of the Haruchika series, Sei Hatsuno holds a distinct position as a mystery novelist whose literary work has successfully transitioned into the visual mediums of anime, manga, and film.
