Katsuhiko Watabiki

Description
Katsuhiko Watabiki was a Japanese actor whose primary career was in live-action film and television, with a limited but notable foray into voice acting. Born on November 23, 1945 in Tokyo, Japan, Watabiki began his acting career after leaving the Nihon University College of Art and joining the Mingei Theatre Company in 1965. He died on December 30, 2020 at the age of 75.

In the context of anime, Watabiki is best known for his role in the film WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3, also known as Mobile Police Patlabor: WXIII. In this 2002 mecha thriller, he voiced Senior Detective Takeshi Kusumi, one of the two lead investigators at the center of the film's conspiracy plot. According to casting notes for the film, Watabiki was considered a celebrity voice actor, as he was brought in for the role due to his established reputation as a dramatic actor in live-action productions rather than as a regular anime voice actor.

His deep and resonant speaking voice, which he used to portray Kusumi, was one of his distinctive attributes as a performer. Beyond this primary anime credit, the same Patlabor film also credits him with the voice role of Shizuo Miyanomori. His only other notable voice work was not in anime but in the live-action tokusatsu series Ultraman Mebius from 2006, where he portrayed the character Arasaki, a maintenance chief.

Watabikis career was defined by extensive collaborations with other actors and directors in live-action cinema. He frequently worked with actors such as Murakami Hiroaki, Takenaka Naoto, and Ishibashi Renji, appearing alongside Murakami on seven separate occasions. His reputation was built on playing a wide range of characters, often using his stern looks to play villains, though he also portrayed warm paternal figures in popular television dramas. While his filmography as a voice actor is extremely limited to the early 2000s, his performance in WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 remains his most recognized contribution to the world of anime.
