Benoît Marleau
Description
Benoît Marleau was a Canadian actor from Quebec, recognized for his extensive work in dubbing for both film and television. While his career spanned a variety of genres, he is particularly remembered by anime audiences for providing the French voice for the powerful Psychic-type Pokémon, Mewtwo. He voiced this character in the Quebec French dubs of two significant animated films from the Pokémon franchise: Pokémon: The First Movie and its direct sequel, Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns. These performances stand as his most prominent and direct contributions to the anime medium.
Beyond his work in anime, Marleau had a prolific career as a dubbing artist, lending his voice to a wide array of well-known characters in Western animation. He was perhaps best known for being the Quebec voice of the cynical bartender Moe Szyslak on the long-running series The Simpsons, a role he held from the first season through the seventeenth, as well as for the theatrical film. His other notable dubbing roles included Bill Dauterive on King of the Hill (titled Henri pis sa gang in Quebec), Dino the pet dinosaur on The Flintstones (Les Pierrafeu), and the villainous Megabyte on the CGI series ReBoot. He also performed voice work for several characters on the children's program Bonjour Sésame, the Quebecois version of Open Sesame.
Before focusing on voice acting, Marleau had an established career in live-action performance. He began acting in the late 1950s on the Radio-Canada soap opera La pension Velder. Over the following decades, he appeared in numerous Quebec television series, including a notable role as Jean-Paul Bordeleau on the sitcom Chez Denise, and in films such as Y'a toujours moyen de moyenner. He was also an active theatre performer, particularly with the Théâtre du Rideau Vert, where he appeared in productions like A Midsummer Night's Dream. Benoît Marleau passed away on June 3, 2009, at the age of 72.
