Donald Arthur
Description
Donald Arthur was an American-born voice actor who worked primarily in Germany. Born in New York on April 29, 1937, he studied opera before moving to Munich in 1960. His bicultural background allowed him to perform both English dubbing for German films and German dubbing for English-language productions. His career in the voice acting industry spanned from the 1970s onward, becoming especially known for providing German voices in numerous animated series and films.
Arthur was particularly active in the field of German-language dubbing. Among his most recognized roles were providing the German voice of Kent Brockman on The Simpsons, Chef on South Park, and Igor on Count Duckula. He also lent his voice to the character of the Jabberwocky in the German dub of the Alice in Wonderland anime series. In feature animation, his German dubbing work included the character Gusteau in Pixar's Ratatouille and Gimli in The Lord of the Rings. For Disney, he provided German voices for characters such as Taurus Bulba in Darkwing Duck and the Cyclops in Hercules.
His work extended to numerous Muppet productions for German audiences. He provided the German voice for Beauregard and Uncle Deadly on Die Muppet Show, as well as Boober Fraggle in the German co-production Die Fraggles. He reprised these roles in several Muppet films, including Die Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted. His deep bass voice also made him a frequent sound-alike for actors such as Peter Ustinov and James Earl Jones in German dubs.
Arthur also performed English-language voice work, most notably providing the voice of Falkor in The Neverending Story II. He had on-camera roles in the miniseries Wagner and the television film The Saint: Wrong Number. Donald Arthur passed away on September 21, 2016.
