Horst Sachtleben

Description
Horst Sachtleben was a German actor and voice actor known for his extensive work in film, television, and dubbing. Born in Berlin on September 24, 1930, he passed away in Munich on May 23, 2022, at the age of 91. While he had a long and celebrated career as a stage and screen actor, including a prominent role as Bishop Gottlieb Rossbauer on the German television series Um Himmels Willen, he was also a prolific voice artist with hundreds of dubbing credits to his name.

In the world of anime, Sachtleben is recognized for his role in the Lupin III franchise. He provided the German voice for the character Daisuke Jigen in the first German dubbing of the 1979 film The Castle of Cagliostro, which was released in 1984. In this particular dubbing, the character's name was anglicized to Dan Dee. This early version of the film featured significant changes to character names and the script to appeal to a Western audience. In later German dubbings of the same film and other Lupin III works, the role of Jigen was taken over by voice actor Tilo Schmitz.

Beyond this notable anime role, his voice acting portfolio was vast and varied. Sachtleben lent his distinctive voice to many international stars for the German-language market. One of his most famous dubbing roles was as Lieutenant Columbo, dubbing Peter Falk in many episodes of the iconic television series. He was also the German voice of Jim Broadbent, most recognizably as Professor Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter film series starting with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Other actors he dubbed included Woody Allen, Harvey Keitel, and Peter Fonda.

His animation dubbing work also included roles in non-Japanese productions, such as the crow Jeremy in The Secret of NIMH and Zugor in Tarzan 2. Over his long career, Sachtleben accumulated around 800 speaking roles as a voice actor, showcasing his remarkable range and lasting presence in the industry. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was named a Bayerischer Staatsschauspieler (Bavarian State Actor) in 1977 and received the Hersfeld-Preis for his theater work in 2010.
