Shun Saeki
Description
Shun Saeki is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator, born on November 11, 1984. He is best known as the illustrator for the popular manga and anime series Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma. Saeki began his artistic career under the pen name tosh, working as a creator of adult manga. During this period from approximately 2010 to 2011, he became a highly popular artist in that genre, with his collected volumes selling over 400,000 copies. His last work published under the tosh name appeared in June 2012. He also previously worked as an assistant and student to fellow manga artist Mitsuhiro Miura, whose style influenced his own.
Saeki transitioned to mainstream commercial success when he began collaborating with writer Yuto Tsukuda. His first non-adult commercial serialization was a short manga titled Kimi to Watashi no Renai Soudan, which was later included in the third volume of Food Wars!. In June 2012, Saeki and Tsukuda launched Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where it ran until June 2019. Saeki was responsible for the artwork while Tsukuda wrote the story, with professional chef Yuki Morisaki providing culinary supervision. The series became a major success, known for its dramatic cooking battles and exaggerated, ecchi-style reaction sequences where characters experienced food-induced euphoria. Saeki’s background in adult romantic comedy directly contributed to the development of this signature element. The manga has been compiled into 36 volumes.
Beyond the original manga, Saeki is credited as the original creator for several anime adaptations of his work. These include Food Wars! The Third Plate, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Fourth Plate, Food Wars! The Fifth Plate, and the original video animation Shokugeki no Sōma: Takumi no Shitamachi Gassen. He is also credited for the specials Shokugeki no Sōma San no Sara: Erina no Shin Seikatsu. His role in these productions is as the original author or character designer.
Following the conclusion of Food Wars!, Saeki continued to collaborate with writer Yuto Tsukuda on several projects. These include the short series Yugeng to Onna Ryou Gakkou in 2020 and the serialized manga Tenkoku Cinema, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2023. Saeki also worked with writer Nisio Isin on the one-shot Fukumen Tantei Mask do Holmes to Kisu Dorobō in 2019. He contributed to the One Piece franchise by illustrating Food Wars: Sanji, a crossover one-shot written by Tsukuda and based on characters from Eiichiro Oda's series. Outside of manga, Saeki has provided original character designs for other media, including the anime series Active Raid and the video game Tales of Luminaria.
