Kaori Naruse

Description
Kaori Naruse is a Japanese manga artist known primarily for her illustration work on the manga series Prétear, also known as Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Pretear. Her professional activity as a creator spans from the late 1990s into the 2010s, with her most recognized contribution being the adaptation of Junichi Sato's original story into a completed manga series.

Naruse is credited as the illustrator for Prétear, which is based on a story concept by Junichi Sato. The manga was serialized in Monthly Asuka Fantasy DX and published by Kadokawa Shoten, spanning four volumes released from May 2000 to July 2001. The series falls within the shōjo demographic and blends the magical girl genre with elements of the western fairy tale tradition, specifically reinterpreting the narrative of Snow White. The commercial and critical recognition of Prétear led to a thirteen-episode anime television adaptation that aired in 2001, for which Naruse is also credited as the original creator.

Before her work on Prétear, Naruse illustrated the manga Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, a two-volume series published by Kadokawa Shoten in 1999, which adapts the storyline of the role-playing video game of the same name by Game Arts. Other early credited works include Iina – Feel for Love from 1998.

Following Prétear, Naruse’s published output became less frequent. She later returned to create manga adaptations of romance novels for Ohzora Shuppan. These works include Koi no Planning from 2010, Nessa no Ou to Kiken na Keiyaku from 2013, and Princess Perfect to Furachi na Ouji from 2014, which are targeted at a josei audience.

Naruse’s artistic identity is characterized by a sweet and cute drawing style that has evolved over time. Her significant contribution to the industry lies in her visual interpretation and manga adaptation of a notable early 2000s magical girl series. Academic analysis of her work on Prétear has focused on how the series subverts traditional fairy tale archetypes, transforming the passive princess into an active heroine tasked with saving the world, a common theme in the magical girl genre. Her career demonstrates a path from adapting video game properties to co-creating an original anime-linked manga, and later transitioning to illustrating romance novels.
