Akira Sakuma

Description
Akira Sakuma, born on July 29, 1952, in Tokyo, is a Japanese game creator, writer, and media personality whose career spans multiple facets of the entertainment industry. While widely recognized as the creator of the long-running Momotaro Dentetsu video game series, his influence extends to manga criticism, broadcast writing, and music. Sakuma is a graduate of Rikkyo University and was an early student at Kazuo Koike’s Gekika Sonjuku, a notable school for manga creators. He considers both Koike and composer Koichi Sugiyama as mentors.

Sakuma began his career as a freelance writer, contributing to publications such as the anime magazine OUT and gaining significant recognition for his work on the Jump Broadcast Station, a popular readers’ column in Weekly Shonen Jump, where he served as creator and director from 1982 to 1995. This period established his reputation within the manga industry, where he also worked as a critic and essayist. He collaborated with prominent manga artists, co-authoring the instructional book Hetappi Manga Kenkyūjo with Akira Toriyama and working on other projects with Yuji Horii, a friend from his university days and the creator of Dragon Quest.

Sakuma’s career took a significant turn in 1987 when he entered the video game industry. His debut game, Momotaro Densetsu (Peach Boy Legend), was released for the Family Computer in 1987, followed by Momotaro Dentetsu (Peach Boy Electric Railway) in 1988. The latter, a board game-style multiplayer game, became a cultural phenomenon and spawned a highly successful series known for its blend of strategy, Japanese geography, and humor. His detailed approach to game creation, such as extensive research for incorporating real-world locations and properties, became a hallmark of his work.

Beyond game design, Sakuma has worked as a radio personality, singer, and lyricist, even releasing an album. His diverse career has made him a notable figure in Japanese popular culture, recognized for influencing younger generations of creators across various media. In 2021, he received a Special Achievement Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival, honoring his lasting contribution to the field.
