Michiru Hōjō
Description
Michiru Hōjō was a Japanese actress and voice actor born on February 9, 1930, in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. She passed away on September 6, 2018. Her father was the playwright and author Hideji Hōjō. She was affiliated with the talent agency Rokugeisha.
Hōjō's career began on the stage, where she performed with theater companies such as Shinkokugeki and Gekidan Wakajishi. Her first voice acting role came in 1957 with the Japanese dub of the television series Champion the Wonder Horse, in which she played a boy. This marked the start of a prolific period in voice work, particularly in dubbing foreign productions and early anime.
Among her most notable roles are two lead parts in classic anime series. She voiced Hayato Azuma in the 1964 series Zero-sen Hayato and played the title role of Shadar in the 1967 series Bōken Shōnen Shadar. Her extensive work in television dubbing included portraying the iconic role of Jeff Miller in the long-running Japanese version of Lassie, which aired from 1957 to 1966. She also provided the voice for Mark McCain in The Rifleman, a Western series broadcast in Japan from 1960 to 1963.
Hōjō specialized in playing young boy characters, a niche she felt suited her abilities. She believed that rather than artificially altering her voice to sound masculine, the key was to fully embody the spirit and mindset of a boy. Other significant voice roles included Haji in the anime Kagaku Shōnen J.Q. and a young Atlas in the 1980 version of Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy). Her work also extended to animated films, as she voiced Kai in a Japanese dub of The Snow Queen.
In the 1980s, Hōjō retired from voice acting to concentrate on stage work, and she eventually ceased performing as an actress following her father's death in 1996.
