Shakina Nayfack

Description
Shakina Nayfack is an American actress, writer, director, producer, and activist who is known for her work in television, theater, and animation. Her most significant role as an anime voice actor is providing the English dub voice for the character Hana in the 2003 film Tokyo Godfathers, directed by Satoshi Kon.

Her involvement with Tokyo Godfathers came about for a 2020 English-language re-release of the film by GKIDS. The search for an actress to voice Hana, a homeless trans woman with a big heart, was extensive. The ADR Director, Michael Sinterniklaas, was specifically looking for a trans actress to authentically portray the character, a move intended to honor the film's pioneering narrative. Nayfack was suggested by a mutual friend and was cast after a recorded audition, a process she has described as happening very quickly. This was her first voice acting role. For the film's nightclub scene, which featured Hana singing, Nayfack contributed her songwriting skills to help craft the lyrics for the English version.

Beyond this role, the available information does not list other major anime voice acting credits. Her career has largely focused on live-action television, where she has had recurring roles on series such as Hulu's Difficult People, NBC's Connecting (which made her the first transgender person to have a starring role on a major network comedy), and Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix. She was also a writer, producer, and guest star on the musical finale of the Amazon series Transparent.

In the theater world, Nayfack is a founding member and the former artistic director of the Musical Theatre Factory in New York City, an organization that has helped develop new works, including Michael R. Jackson's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop. She has also written and performed in her own autobiographical rock musicals. For her work in theater and activism, she has received a Lilly Award and a TRU Humanitarian Award, among other honors.
