Maria João Luís
Description
Maria João Luís is a Portuguese actress and voice actress, primarily known for her work in the European Portuguese dub of the Pokémon anime series. Her most prominent voice role is that of Ash Ketchum, the series' main protagonist. She holds the distinction of being the first voice actress to provide the character's voice for the Portuguese audience.
Her tenure as Ash began with the earliest episodes of the anime. She voiced the character regularly from the first episode until approximately episode thirty-one. She also briefly returned to the role for episode thirty-three. Beyond the television series, Maria João Luís reprised the role of Ash for the first two Pokémon theatrical films, Pokémon: The First Movie and Pokémon: The Movie 2000.
In addition to her work in anime, Maria João Luís has a substantial career as an actress in live-action film, television, and theatre in her native Portugal. Her live-action film credits include roles in productions such as Tráfico (1998), Mal (1999), and A Bela e o Paparazzo (2010). Her acting work extends to television series as well. While her voice acting in animation is largely defined by her foundational work on Pokémon, she also provided voice work for the Portuguese dub of the animated film Coitado do Jorge (Poor George) in 1993.
