Ai

Description
Ai is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the series Million Doll, which was adapted into a television anime in 2015. Born on July 26, 1986, she is a female creator whose professional work is deeply rooted in her personal passion for偶像 (idol) culture. Before debuting as a manga artist, Ai worked as a web director and later as a businessperson, but she ultimately left that career to focus on drawing manga, as she found it impossible to balance both jobs with her desire to create fan magazines for idol groups like AKB.

Ai’s most prominent original work is Million Doll, a web manga that began serialization on the free manga website Ganma! in December 2013 and continued until November 2016. The story centers on Sūko, an idol-loving shut-in who has a unique ability to make any idol popular through her blogging, and her interactions with various local and underground idols in Fukuoka. The series was later compiled into two tankōbon volumes. In July 2015, an anime adaptation of Million Doll premiered on Tokyo MX and other networks. The anime was a short-form series, with each episode running approximately four minutes, and was produced by the studio Asahi Production. The anime concluded its run in September 2015. In 2018, Ai launched a sequel manga titled Million Doll citybeat.

Beyond Million Doll, Ai has created other works that reflect her deep engagement with idol fandom. In 2016, she began serializing Wotafufu: Idol Otaku no Kekkon Seikatsu, a non-fiction essay manga about her daily life married to a fellow idol enthusiast. Her artistic identity is heavily defined by this insider perspective on偶像文化; she is recognized as a manga artist with an unusually profound knowledge of idol groups. She regularly participates in fan events as an audience member, has appeared on stage alongside voice actors to discuss the anime adaptation of her work, and hosts a regular study group called Ai-san’s Entertainment Music Research Department at the LOFT PLUS ONE venue in Tokyo. She has also applied her art style to create merchandise illustrations for professional偶像 singers such as Yufu Terashima and Arisa Nōto. Through works like Million Doll, Ai has established herself as a unique voice in the industry, bridging the gap between manga creation and the real-world idol fandom that she actively inhabits.
