Ayumi Ishii
Description
Ayumi Ishii is the Japanese manga artist responsible for creating the series Nobunaga Concerto. Ishii was born on September 24, 1985, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. She began her professional career in the mid-2000s after receiving recognition in several newcomer competitions, including winning the 56th Shogakukan Newcomer Manga Award in 2005 for a short work titled Myorinji no Chukkun.
Ishii is best known as the writer and illustrator of Nobunaga Concerto, a historical fantasy manga that has been serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Shonen Sunday since its launch on May 12, 2009. The series follows Saburo, a modern high school student who travels back in time to Japan's Sengoku period and is forced to impersonate the young warlord Oda Nobunaga. As of early 2022, the manga had been collected into twenty-two tankobon volumes, with a twenty-third volume planned to conclude the series. In 2011, Nobunaga Concerto received the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category.
The success of Nobunaga Concerto led to multiple media adaptations, establishing Ishii as a significant original creator in the industry. In 2014, the manga was adapted into an anime television series, for which Ishii is credited as the original creator. That same year, a live-action television drama adaptation aired, followed by a feature film in 2016. These adaptations helped broaden the audience for Ishii's work beyond the manga readership.
Beyond Nobunaga Concerto, Ishii has written and illustrated other manga works, including Yami Yami Kururi and Utautai no kurousagi, though these titles are less widely known. Her earlier career includes several short stories published in magazines such as Weekly Shonen Sunday and Monthly Shonen Sunday, including Sasukekun no Yuutsu and Yamato to Doji. Her artistic identity is closely tied to the shonen demographic, with her work frequently blending historical settings with speculative fiction elements such as time travel and alternate history. The recurring premise of a modern protagonist navigating the politics of Japan's warring states period defines her major creative output.
