Hiroto Kawabata, also known as Hiroto Kawabata, is a Japanese writer born in 1964 in Hyogo Prefecture and raised in Chiba Prefecture. He graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo. His professional career began as a journalist for Nippon Television, where he worked as a science and technology reporter. He later studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism as a Fellowship Program participant.

Kawabata launched his writing career with the 1995 nonfiction work Kujira o totte, kangaeta. He made his fiction debut in 1998 when his novel Natsu no Rocket won the fifteenth Suntory Mystery Award Grand Prize. Since then, he has authored a wide range of novels and nonfiction books covering topics from finance and computers to natural history and human evolution. His 2017 book Wareware wa naze wareware dake nanoka, about the diversity of ancient human species in Asia, received the Science Journalist Award and the Kodansha Science Publication Award in 2018. His 2023 novel Dodo-cho to kodoku-cho won the Nitta Jiro Literary Award in 2024.

Within the field of anime and manga, Hiroto Kawabata is credited as an original creator for the 2012 work Ginga e Kickoff!!, also known as Victory Kickoff!!. The manga was serialized in Shueishas Saikyo Jump magazine. Sources credit Kawabata as the scenario writer or author for the series, with Hiroshi Wakamatsu or Takashi Yamada handling the artwork. The story falls within the sports genre, focusing on a youth soccer team. The property was adapted into an anime television series that aired in 2012, produced by a partnership including TYO Productions, Shueisha, and NHK Enterprise.
