Jean-Paul Dermont

Description
Jean-Paul Dermont was a Belgian actor known for his work in dubbing for French-language versions of animated series and films. Born on November 6, 1943, he was active in the entertainment industry from the 1960s, with a significant focus on voice acting in his later career, and passed away on January 25, 2025.

Though his career spanned theater, television, and film, Dermont is best recognized among anime audiences for his distinctive, gruff vocal tone, which made him a natural fit for older and authoritative characters. One of his most prominent anime film roles was providing the voice of Anubis in the 2004 film Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie - The Pyramid of Light, in which he voiced the ancient Egyptian deity and primary antagonist.

Beyond this notable film appearance, Dermont's anime voice credits included roles in several other series and films. He voiced the Beast in an adaptation of X-Men Evolution and contributed to the French dubs of Gun x Sword, A Letter to Momo, and Cyborg 009: Call of Justice, where he frequently portrayed elderly male characters. His voice work also extended beyond Japanese animation; he provided the French voice for Odin in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and voiced Dr. Claw in the 2005 Inspector Gadget 3D film. He also performed additional voices for live-action series such as Doctor Who.

While much of his dubbing work consisted of secondary or supporting roles rather than leading characters, his consistent presence in the industry and his recognizable voice made him a reliable figure in French-language anime dubbing. His contributions are noted particularly for adding depth to older character roles, capitalizing on the naturally rough quality of his voice.
