Yoshikazu Takai

Description
Yoshikazu Takai is a Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, and picture book author whose creative work spans publishing, animation, and character design. He was born on March 5, 1961, in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, and graduated from the design department of Osaka University of the Arts in 1983.

Takai is best known as the illustrator of the Kaidan Restaurant book series, which served as the source material for the anime television series Thriller Restaurant. The Kaidan Restaurant series is a collection of children's horror anthologies edited by author Miyoko Matsutani, with illustrations provided by Takai in collaboration with Kumiko Kato. The series began publication in 1996 through the publisher Doshinsha and eventually grew to fifty volumes, with over eight million copies sold. Each book presents ghost stories framed as courses in a meal, including appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

The anime adaptation, produced by Toei Animation and titled Thriller Restaurant, aired on the TV Asahi network from October 13, 2009, to June 8, 2010, spanning twenty-three episodes. The series retained the anthology format of the original books, following sixth-grade schoolgirl Ozora Ako and her classmates as they encounter supernatural events and share ghost stories. A live-action film adaptation was also released on August 21, 2010.

Beyond the Kaidan Restaurant series, Takai has created numerous picture books and children's series. He is the author and illustrator of the Ohanashi Kusuma-kun and Waku Waku Kusuma-kun series published by Kumon Publishing, as well as the Kurokuma series of picture books about a little bear, which includes titles such as Osanpo Kurokuma, Yukino Hi Kurokuma, and Umibe no Kurokuma. He also created the Nekodaruman character, a fusion of a beckoning cat and a Daruma doll, which became the basis for his own original world called Nekodaruman World.

Takai has received recognition in the international picture book community, with his work being selected for the Bologna International Picture Book Exhibition in 2001, 2003, 2006, and 2011. He has also contributed character designs for NHK's long-running childrens program Okaasan to Issho, including the November 2001 song Bikkuri Tamageta for which he wrote the lyrics and designed characters. His design work extends to mascot characters for commercial and civic purposes, including Minyan for the Osaka Sennichimae shopping district and Miyatan for Nishinomiya City.

Takai serves as the chairman and representative director of Kyoden Creation, a creative company. His artistic style has been described as imaginative and energetic, occupying a space between animation and manga, with a focus on creating work that energizes those who see it. His career includes numerous solo and group exhibitions across Japan since his first solo exhibition at the Umeda Chika Center gallery in 1982. The success of the Kaidan Restaurant series, both as books and as an anime adaptation, represents a significant contribution to childrens horror media in Japan, demonstrating how illustrated anthologies can successfully transition to television animation while maintaining their original format and appeal.
