Alfonso Carralero

Description
Juan Alfonso Carralero is a Mexican voice actor with a prolific career in Latin American dubbing, particularly known for his extensive work in anime. Born on February 11, 1957, in Mexico City, Carralero began his journey into performance by studying acting for three years at the school of the Asociación Nacional de Actores. His entry into the world of dubbing came through an invitation from actor Francisco Colmenero, following his participation in theater and radio dramas. Between 1978 and 1988, he resided in Los Angeles, where he also worked extensively in dubbing. Carralero emphasizes that his background in acting is fundamental to his dubbing work, stating that it is not just about doing voices but about feeling the character.

Carralero is most widely recognized by anime fans as the definitive voice of Daisuke Jigen, the sharp-shooting partner of Arsène Lupin III, for numerous productions in Latin America. He voiced the character in a long list of films and television specials, including Lupin III: Dragon of Doom, Lupin III: Island of Assassins, Lupin III: Crisis in Tokyo, Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus, and Lupin III: The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure, among many others. His portrayal of Jigen also extends to the movies Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, the latter being part of a Mexican dub produced between 2001 and 2003.

Beyond the world of Lupin III, Carralero has voiced other iconic anime characters. He played the lead role of Koji Kabuto in the latter part of the classic mecha series Mazinger Z. His debut role in anime was as the protagonist Kamui in Ninpu Kamui Gaiden. His extensive filmography includes a wide variety of characters, such as Hideki in Kick no Oni, Tony Bronson in Arrow Emblem Grand Prix no Taka, a P.E. Teacher in Mirmo Zibang, Juuzo Numa in Sukeban Deka, Takateru Suga in Suikoden Demon Century, and Alex or Shin Himoto in Uchu Kubo Blue Noah. In more recent years, he voiced Don Valentino, a half-goat crime boss, in the 2021 Mexican dub of Cuticle Detective Inaba. His talent also encompasses roles in popular series like Mayuri Kurotsuchi in Bleach and Harbinger de Tauro in Saint Seiya Omega.

In addition to his on-screen voice work, Carralero has contributed to the industry as a dubbing director. His directing credits include the Mexican dubs for several Studio Ghibli films such as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro for the 2010 redub, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke for the 2010 redub. He also provided narration and voiced the character Jiji in the 2010 Mexican dub of Kiki's Delivery Service. His work frequently involved collaborations with other family members in the dubbing industry, including his former wife Ruth Toscano and his son Rodrigo Carralero.

Carralero is also known for his live-action dubbing, famously providing the Latin American Spanish voice for Will Smith in numerous films and the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He has also dubbed actors such as Martin Lawrence, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Eddie Murphy, and John Travolta. His voice can be heard in various animated projects, including as the voice of Megamind, the current voice of Woody Woodpecker, Roger Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and RoboCop in the animated series of the same name. He is also recognized for voicing Beakman in the science program Beakman's World. In 2023, Carralero publicly criticized Sony Pictures' decision to cast social media influencers in the Latin American Spanish dub of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, calling the choice miserable and questioning the lack of professional acting experience brought to such major productions.

Currently, Carralero remains active as an academic director and voice acting instructor, sharing his expertise at schools like Aftermoon Films and Magic Voices, where he advises aspiring voice actors to focus on acting as the primary foundation for a career in dubbing.
