Daphne Gere

Description
Daphne Gere is an American voice actress and musician known for her work on English dubs of anime produced by FUNimation in the early 2000s. Her most recognized voice role is Saki Hanajima, the soft-spoken and psychic friend of the protagonist, in the 2001 adaptation of the anime series Fruits Basket. Gere voiced the character throughout the original series, which ran for one season.

Gere’s entry into voice acting was marked by a chance encounter with voice director and fellow FUNimation actor Christopher Sabat. In an interview, she recounted being discovered after making a cat-like sound at a social gathering, which led Sabat to invite her to record at the studio. This opportunity resulted in her being cast as Maron, the girlfriend of the character Krillin, in the Garlic Jr. Saga of the popular series Dragon Ball Z. She voiced Maron during that filler arc, though the character was later redubbed by another actress for a remastered release.

Beyond her on-screen voice work, Gere was also a vocalist for several anime soundtracks. She performed the ending theme for the 2001 Fruits Basket series, titled Serenade, and contributed to the Dragon Ball franchise by singing the English ending song I'll Give You Romance. She also sang closing songs for the series Blue Gender. Her professional connection with Sabat extended into these musical projects; he provided the voiceover for the English version of the Dragon Ball ending theme.

Gere was based in Dallas, Texas, during her period of activity with FUNimation. She was also the lead singer for an ambient indie group named Mercova. Her time in voice acting was relatively brief and primarily occurred around 2001 and 2002. She did not reprise her role as Saki Hanajima for the 2019 remake of the Fruits Basket anime.
