Wakaba Murasaki is a Japanese actor and voice artist born on January 3, 1982, in Tokyo, Japan. He is also known by his real name, Kenta Mogami. Beyond his work in anime, Murasaki has an extensive career in traditional Japanese popular theater and is an accomplished Tsugaru shamisen musician.
Murasaki began his stage career at a very young age, making his debut in December 1989. He gained recognition as a member of the Chibi Tama San Kyodai, a popular children's performing group within the Wakaba family theater troupe. This group was featured on the Fuji Television program Ganbare! Chibi Tama San Kyodai! from 1994 to 1999. In 2000, he took on the role of leader for the reformed New Wakaba Theater Troupe, focusing on preserving tradition while bringing innovation to the stage.
As a musician, Murasaki began studying the Tsugaru shamisen at the age of nine under Go Murakami. In February 2009, he was granted the professional stage name Goyu Murakami in recognition of his mastery of the instrument. He has performed extensively in Japan and internationally, including tours in the United States.
Murasaki's most recognized role in anime is providing the voice for Akito Sohma in the 2001 television series adaptation of Fruits Basket. The character of Akito is the head of the Sohma family and the central figure of the zodiac curse. In this particular adaptation, the character is presented as male, which differs from the character's revealed gender in the original manga series and later anime adaptation. This voice role remains his most prominent credit in the animation field.
In addition to his performing career, Murasaki comes from a family of performers. He has three brothers, Ichinojo Wakaba, Tatsuya Wakaba, and Katsumi Wakaba, and a sister, Mikako Wakaba, all involved in the theater arts. He continues to lead the New Wakaba Theater Troupe and remains active in both stage performance and shamisen concerts.
