Masako Ozawa
Description
Masako Nozawa is a Japanese voice actor from Tokyo, born on October 25, 1936. She is affiliated with the talent agency Aoni Production. The actor sometimes credited as Masako Ozawa for the role of Shen-Long Belvedere in the series E's Otherwise is the same person, with that credit representing an alternate romanization of her name.
Nozawa began her career as a child actor before making her anime voice acting debut in the 1963 series Astro Boy. She is widely regarded as a legendary figure in the industry and one of the first generation of professional voice actors in Japan. For a significant portion of her career, she ran her own talent agency, Office Nozawa, before it closed in April 2012, after which she returned to Aoni Production.
Nozawa is most famous for her decades-long association with the Dragon Ball franchise, where she has voiced the protagonist Son Goku and numerous members of his family since the series began in 1986. Her roles in the series include Son Goku, Son Gohan, Son Goten, Bardock, and the fused characters Vegetto and Gogeta. Her performance as Goku has earned her two Guinness World Records: one for the longest video game voice acting career and another for the longest period voicing the same character in video games.
Her extensive career includes many other significant roles. She voiced the title character Kitaro in the first two GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series, a role she later reprised in 2018 as the character's father, Daddy Eyeball. She is also known as Tetsuro Hoshino in Galaxy Express 999, Guilmon in Digimon Tamers, Doctor Kureha in One Piece, and Huckleberry Finn in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Other notable parts include the Narrator for Digimon Tamers, Hina Urashima in Love Hina, and Kinta in Mirumo De Pon. In the 2003 science fiction anime E's Otherwise, she voiced Shen-Long Belvedere, the twin brother of Shin-Lu Belvedere, who has a deep hatred for the main protagonist Kai.
Throughout her career, Nozawa has worked repeatedly with specific production teams and franchises. Her most significant and enduring recurring collaboration has been with the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, and the various animation studios that have produced the many series, films, and video games in that franchise for nearly four decades. She has also frequently worked on series in the long-running Digimon and GeGeGe no Kitaro franchises.
In recognition of her contributions to the industry, Nozawa has received numerous honors. In 2025, she became the first voice actor ever to be named a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government. Her other accolades include the Merit Award at the Tokyo Anime Award, the Achievement Award at the Seiyu Awards, and the Best Voice Actor award at the Japanese Movie Critic Awards. She has stated her commitment to continuing her voice acting career, delivering performances with all her energy.
