Jose Luis Sansalvador

Description
José Luis Sansalvador, whose full name is José Luis Martínez Sansalvador, was a Spanish actor, director, and adaptation writer recognized for his extensive work in dubbing for Spanish audiences. He was born in Barcelona, Spain, on February 20, 1933, and passed away in the same city on March 11, 2006.

His professional career as a dubbing actor began in the late 1950s and he remained active through the mid-1990s, with a brief return to the profession from 2000 to 2004. Over the course of his career, he became known for his deep and powerful vocal register, which made him a frequent choice for dubbing performers known for playing tough or authoritative characters. Among the many Hollywood actors he voiced in Castilian Spanish were Gene Hackman, Robert Mitchum, Humphrey Bogart, Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, and George Kennedy. He was notably the regular Spanish voice for Robert Mitchum, dubbing him in twenty-three films between 1964 and 1994. His work also included dubbing Sean Connery in productions such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Name of the Rose, as well as providing the voice for Governor Wilhuff Tarkin in Star Wars (1977).

In the realm of animated film, one of his most recognized roles is providing the Castilian Spanish voice for the protagonist in the Studio Ghibli film Porco Rosso. In this film, he voiced the character Marco Pagotto, the ace pilot turned pig known as Porco Rosso. While his work on Porco Rosso is well-documented, available information does not confirm his participation in the anime film Akira as Colonel Shikishima. Beyond his work as a performer, Sansalvador also served as a dubbing director and dialogue adapter on many projects. He was married to fellow dubbing actress Gloria Roig.
