Patricia Ja Lee
Description
Patricia Ja Lee is an American actress known for her work in English-language dubs of Japanese anime, as well as for live-action television roles and video game voice acting. Her career in voice work began in the late 1980s and continued through the 2000s, contributing to several notable anime series licensed for North American release.
Lee started acting at the age of twelve in 1987. One of her earliest voice credits from this period is the lead role of Riquinni Nonderaiko in the English dub of the 1987 film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise. In the early 1990s, she used the alias Melody Lee for several projects, providing voices for OVA series such as Moldiver, El Hazard: The Magnificent World, and Hyper Doll. She also had a small role as additional voices in the 2001 Animaze dub of the film Akira, credited as Pee Jay Lee.
Throughout the late 1990s, Lee built a substantial body of work in anime dubbing produced in the Los Angeles area. In 1998, she voiced the role of Mika Iwakura, the older sister of the protagonist, in the influential psychological cyberpunk series Serial Experiments Lain. That same year, she played Meifa Puzi in an episode of the space western classic Cowboy Bebop. She also voiced the character Afura Mann across multiple series in the El Hazard franchise, including The Wanderers and The Alternative World. Her other roles from this era include a nurse and additional voices in Battle Athletes Victory and the role of Megumi Kurogane in Gate Keepers.
In the 2000s, Lee remained active in anime voiceover. She had a guest role as Mizuki Okajima, the drummer for the band ENOZ, in the 2007 series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She later reprised this role for the spin-off series The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan in 2015. Also in 2008, she voiced the character Patricia Martin, an energetic American exchange student and otaku, in the comedy series Lucky Star. This role shares her first name, a coincidence noted by fans.
Beyond her direct anime voice work, Lee has notable connections to related media. In 2006, she portrayed the lead character Haruhi Suzumiya in the first season of ASOS Brigade, a live-action promotional web series created by Bandai Entertainment to advertise the English release of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She later appeared at the Anime Expo convention in July 2007 as part of the SOS Brigade concert.
Lee is also widely recognized for her work in video games, most prominently providing the voice and motion capture for Jill Valentine in several installments of the Resident Evil franchise, including Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. On live-action television, she is known for the role of Cassie Chan, the Pink Ranger, in Power Rangers Turbo and Power Rangers in Space.
