Campbell Lane

Description
Campbell Lane was a Canadian actor and voice artist born on July 15, 1935, in Montreal, Canada. He built a prolific career primarily in Vancouver, working extensively in both live-action television productions and voice-over work for animation and video games. Lane passed away on January 30, 2014, at the age of 78. He was known for having a distinctive, gravelly voice that made him a go-to actor for authoritative and foreboding narrative roles. His career as a voice actor included significant contributions to English dubs of Japanese anime series, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s.

In the field of anime, Campbell Lane is perhaps best recognized for two specific roles. He provided the voice for Mr. Ichinose in the English dub of the classic romantic comedy series Maison Ikkoku. He also served as the Narrator for the English-language version of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and its follow-up film, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. Beyond these prominent credits, his voice work in anime and related Japanese animation projects included the role of Aoi, also known as B, in Key the Metal Idol and Mr. Kobayashi in the short OVA series Mega Man: Upon a Star.

Beyond his specific anime roles, Lane had a diverse career voicing characters in Western animation and video games. He voiced Rampage in the popular series Beast Wars: Transformers, Mastermind and Professor Thorton in X-Men: Evolution, and Skeletor in The New Adventures of He-Man. His other animation credits include Dr. X in Action Man and Alpha Prime in RoboCop: Alpha Commando. In the video game industry, he was well-known for his work on the Homeworld series, providing the voice of the narrator and the Bentusi species in Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2.

Lane's career was marked by several recurring collaborations, both in voice work and live-action television. He appeared in multiple episodes of the iconic series The X-Files, playing different characters such as the Committee Chairman, the Calusari Elder, and Hohman's Father. He also had a recurring role as a Hybrid in the Battlestar Galactica TV movie Razor. His distinctive voice led to him taking over the role of the announcer for the series Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction in 2002. While his work was consistent, his legacy as an anime voice actor is firmly anchored by his performances in Maison Ikkoku and as the narrator for Gundam Wing, roles that remain appreciated by fans of classic English-dubbed anime.
