Description
Teofilo Calle was a Spanish actor and dramaturgo known for his work in theatre, cinema, television, and dubbing. Born Teofilo Calle Massa in Casas de Benítez, Cuenca, in 1937, he studied interpretation at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD) in Madrid. His artistic career began in 1955 on the stages of the Teatro María Guerrero. A versatile performer who worked extensively in radio and television, he also wrote several dramatic works and published an autobiography.
In the field of dubbing, Calle is best remembered for his work on the anime series Saint Seiya, known in Spanish as Los Caballeros del Zodiaco. He provided the voice for multiple characters in the classic series, most notably Saga de Géminis, who also holds the position of the Patriarca, and Dohko de Libra. The Spanish dubbing for the character of Saga was first performed by Vicente Martínez in a single episode, after which Teofilo Calle took over the role for the remainder of the series. His other roles in the same series included Ichi de Hydra, Gigas, Jamian de Cuervo, Aracneo de Tarántula, Dio de Mosca, Odín, Poseidón, and various additional voices. He also voiced other notable characters in the series, including Aldebarán de Tauro and Aioria de Leo in two and one episodes respectively.
Beyond anime, Calle had a prolific career in live-action dubbing. One of his most recognized roles in this area was providing the Spanish voice for El abuelo, the character played by Al Lewis in the television series La Familia Monster. In the final part of his life, after retiring from stage performance, he achieved considerable prestige in the world of dubbing, recognized for his deep and well-modulated voice. Teofilo Calle passed away on February 13, 2005, in Córdoba at the age of 68, following a heart transplant.
