Homura Kawamoto
Description
Homura Kawamoto is a Japanese manga writer and original creator, born on July 2, 1987. He is best known as the creator of the Kakegurui franchise, which has expanded into multiple anime seasons, live-action television dramas, and films. Kawamoto began his career in 2009 by posting manga online under the pen name Gyūnyū before making his professional debut in 2014 with Kakegurui Compulsive Gambler, serialized in Square Enix's Gangan Joker magazine and illustrated by Toru Naomura. The series became a commercial success, with over five million copies in print and an anime adaptation produced by MAPPA. He is credited as the original creator for the anime adaptations of Kakegurui and its spin-off Kakegurui Twin, which focuses on the character Mary Saotome.
Beyond the Kakegurui franchise, Kawamoto has been involved in numerous other manga, anime, and multimedia projects. He is credited as an original creator for the anime High Card and High Card The Flowers Bloom, a poker-themed multimedia franchise he developed alongside publisher TMS Entertainment and his younger brother, Hikaru Muno. Kawamoto and Muno are also credited with the original work for the manga and subsequent anime adaptation of Beyblade X, the fourth generation of the Beyblade franchise, which began serialization in Monthly CoroCoro Comic in 2023 with art by Posuka Demizu. Kawamoto typically serves as a writer or story originator while collaborating with separate artists for illustration, a common division of labor in the manga industry.
His artistic identity frequently centers on high-stakes psychological conflicts, strategic competition, and depictions of intense human desire. Many of his works explore themes of gambling, legal battles, or game-based power struggles. He has written series across a wide range of genres and settings, including the courtroom isekai Isekai Hotei Rebuttal Barrister, the mahjong battle manga Greatest M Ijin Mahjong Taisen, and the fantasy series The War of Greedy Witches. In 2021, Kawamoto launched Cheat Slayer in Monthly Dragon Age, but the series was canceled after a single chapter following reader criticism over character similarities to other popular isekai series. Kawamoto subsequently issued an apology regarding the incident. He has maintained a prolific output, at times serializing multiple manga simultaneously, and has also contributed to video games such as Yurukill The Calumniation Games. He frequently collaborates with his brother, Hikaru Muno, who is also a writer.
