FLIPFLOPs

Description
FLIPFLOPs is a Japanese creative duo consisting of two brothers: Shu Miyama, who is responsible for story composition and previously worked under the pen name Ginko, and Yuki Takahata, who handles the artwork. The pair began their career as a same-name doujin circle, a period of activity that continued until 2009, before establishing themselves as a professional manga artist team.

Their debut serialized manga was the comedy series The Everyday Tales of a Cat God, originally titled Nekogami Yaoyorozu, which launched in Akita Shoten’s Champion RED Ichigo magazine in 2007. The series concluded in 2012 and was compiled into six collected volumes. Its popularity led to a twelve-episode television anime adaptation that aired in 2011, later released in North America by NIS America under the title The Everyday Tales of a Cat God.

The duo achieved wider international recognition with their next major work, Darwin’s Game. The manga began serialization in the monthly magazine Bessatsu Shōnen Champion in December 2012 and concluded in October 2023, spanning 30 volumes. As of mid-2019, the series had over two million copies in print. A television anime adaptation produced by studio Nexus premiered in January 2020. Notably, Shu Miyama, the story writer of the duo, personally handled the script for every episode of the anime adaptation.

In addition to their manga work, FLIPFLOPs is active in analog game development under the name FLIPFLOPsGames. In 2011, they released the card game Heart of Crown, which became a long-selling product; by December 2020, its cumulative domestic shipments had surpassed 50,000 copies. A revised second edition of the game was released in January 2022.

As creators, the duo is known for a versatile approach, producing works that range from gag comedy to serious battle narratives, complemented by a detailed artistic style. Their output demonstrates a consistent ability to work across different media, extending their original stories into anime and expanding their creative practice into the realm of tabletop game design.
