Y.A.
Description
Y.A. is a Japanese light novel author and the original creator behind the anime and manga series The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? Known by the pen name Y.A., this creator originates from Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Y.A. began writing as a hobby around 2009, initially producing fan fiction works on the now-closed Nijifan section of the user-generated novel publishing site Shosetsuka ni Narou. After the closure of that platform in 2012, Y.A. began posting original stories on the main Shosetsuka ni Narou website in 2013. The debut of the web novel The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? in June 2013 marked a turning point, leading to a print publication deal in 2014 with MF Books under Media Factory. This series became the creator's breakout work and primary representative title.
The creator's bibliography is extensive and primarily falls within the isekai and fantasy genres. Beyond The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me! which remains ongoing with over thirty volumes, Y.A. has authored multiple other light novel series. These include The Power of Money Drives Away the Warring States Era, The Returned Hero Will Live Peacefully, The Paladin Returning to Another World Becomes the Strongest Exorcist, and An Old Man Uses Electronic Money to Become Unrivaled in a World Full of Deserts. Many of these titles follow a similar pattern of protagonists returning from fantasy worlds to modern Japan or reincarnating into challenging circumstances. Y.A. has also contributed to anthology projects, including a Sword Art Online IF anthology.
The adaptation history of Y.A.s work centers on The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? The light novel series received a manga adaptation illustrated by Hiroki Kusumoto, which began serialization in 2015 on Kadokawa Shoten's ComicWalker website. A second manga adaptation focusing on the story's beginning, illustrated by Bani Rabo, launched in 2019. An anime television adaptation produced by studios Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP aired from April to June 2020, spanning twelve episodes. In the anime production, Y.A. is formally credited as the original creator and author of the source light novels. No other works by Y.A. have received anime adaptations to date.
Recurring themes in Y.A.s writing include isekai reincarnation, political and economic maneuvering, and the struggles of underappreciated or underestimated protagonists. The creator has cited The Legend of the Galactic Heroes as an influence on The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? A notable pattern in Y.A.s later works, particularly those involving characters who return from fantasy worlds to the real world, is the use of selfish protagonists who act on self-centered impulses and face consequences. The creator has also drawn from personal employment experiences, with the short story Employment Ice Age Lullaby being based on those experiences.
In terms of industry significance, Y.A. represents a successful example of a web novel author transitioning to professional print publication through the Shosetsuka ni Narou platform. The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? achieved high rankings on the site, reaching third place in cumulative rankings, and accumulated significant online readership before its print debut. The creators ability to maintain multiple simultaneous serializations across different publishers, including MF Books, Overlap Novels, LINE Bunko Edge, and Dengeki no Shin Bungei, demonstrates established industry presence. Y.A. continues to publish new works regularly across various light novel imprints as of the early 2020s.
