Yoshie Shimamura

Description
Yoshie Shimamura is a Japanese actress and voice actress, also known professionally as Kae Shimamura. She was born on June 29, 1956, in Hiroshima, Japan. Her career is particularly notable for her voice roles in several historically significant and emotionally powerful anime films during the 1980s.

Shimamura is best known for her portrayal of Kimie Nakaoka, the mother of the protagonist, in the acclaimed 1983 anime war film Barefoot Gen. She delivered a poignant performance as a mother struggling to protect her family in the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Shimamura reprised this role for the 1986 sequel, Barefoot Gen 2, continuing to depict the character's enduring trauma and fight against radiation sickness in post-war Japan.

In another film dealing with the legacy of Hiroshima, she voiced the character Tomoko in the 1984 anime Kuroi Ame ni Utarete, which translates to Beaten by Black Rain. Her role as a young woman severely burned by the bombing further established her as a voice actor closely associated with narratives exploring the experiences of the atomic bomb's survivors, known as hibakusha.

Beyond these central roles, Shimamura contributed her voice to other notable animated films of the era. In 1985, she was cast as Giovanni's Mother in the surreal and philosophical anime film Night on the Galactic Railroad. In addition to her voice acting in animation, Shimamura maintained an extensive career as a live-action actress, appearing in numerous Japanese television dramas and films throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s. Her body of work is characterized by a focus on emotionally resonant and historically significant stories, both in animation and live-action.
