Sōichirō Yamamoto
Description
Sōichirō Yamamoto is a Japanese manga artist born on May 31, 1986, in Tonoshō, located on the island of Shōdoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Art at Kyoto Seika University, where he specialized in Japanese painting. His hometown later served as the primary setting for his most famous work, Teasing Master Takagi-san.
Yamamoto began his professional career by winning several awards for his short works, including a notable entry in the Shogakukan Newcomer Manga Awards. Before achieving success, he worked as an assistant to manga artist Yukio Katayama. He made his full-fledged debut as a series creator in 2013 with two simultaneous serializations: Teasing Master Takagi-san and Fudatsuki no Kyōko-chan, both published in Monthly Shōnen Sunday. His breakthrough hit, Teasing Master Takagi-san, ran successfully from 2013 to 2023, becoming his signature work. The manga received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2020.
Following this success, Yamamoto launched several other series, some of which he wrote concurrently. He is also the creator of In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki (2018-2023) and When Will Ayumu Make His Move? (2019-2023). The latter was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, while most of his other works have appeared in Monthly Shōnen Sunday. In addition to his own art and writing, Yamamoto has served as the original story writer for several spin-offs of his popular series. These include Karakai Jōzu no (Moto) Takagi-san, Koi ni Koisuru Yukari-chan, and Karakai Jōzu (?) no Nishikata-san, all of which were illustrated by other artists.
Many of Yamamoto’s manga have been adapted into popular anime television series. Teasing Master Takagi-san received three anime seasons and an animated film, Gekijōban Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san. When Will Ayumu Make His Move? was also adapted into an anime series, as was In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki. A live-action television drama adaptation of Teasing Master Takagi-san has also been produced.
Yamamoto is known for a consistent artistic identity, particularly his distinctive character designs. He is noted for drawing young female characters with prominent, wide foreheads and high hairlines, a stylistic signature that fans frequently highlight. His narratives typically focus on lighthearted, slow-paced romantic comedy and slice-of-life stories centered on themes of youthful teasing and the innocent awkwardness of first love. He maintains a public presence on social media where he regularly shares illustrations of his characters.
