Kerry Shale

Description
Kerry Shale is a Canadian-born actor and voice artist based in London, England, whose extensive career spans theatre, film, television, radio, and video games. While his voice work is prolific across many genres, his credits in English-language dubs of anime are specific and limited. He is confirmed to have provided voices for a small number of anime productions, primarily during the era of UK-based dubbing for the home video market.

In the 1986 original video animation Maris the Chojo, an adaptation of a Rumiko Takahashi manga, Shale voiced the character Murphy. Murphy is a small, fox-like creature and the partner of the titular heroine, Maris. Described as a helper who can transform into various things, the character was noted for being given a broad Irish accent in the English dub produced at the time. This role is one of his most direct and commonly cited connections to anime voice work.

Beyond Maris the Chojo, Shale's voice can be heard in other English anime dubs from the same period. He voiced Umekichi in the Manga UK dub of the 1983 film Ultimate Teacher (also known as Koko wa Greenwood's opening film or The Ninja Student). Additionally, he is credited with a role in the Urotsukidōji III: Return of the Overfiend Director's Edition, providing the voice for a Navy Sergeant in an episode.

Outside of these specific anime credits, Shale has a vast and well-documented career as a character actor and voice artist. His voice is widely recognized for roles in numerous Western animated series and films. He is a long-standing cast member of the children's series Thomas & Friends, voicing characters such as Gordon, Henry, and Diesel across many series and direct-to-video films. He also voiced Larry Needlemeyer and other characters in the BAFTA and Emmy award-winning series The Amazing World of Gumball. His other animation voice work includes series like Dennis the Menace, Roary the Racing Car, and the English version of the feature film Tad, the Lost Explorer.

In the realm of video games, Shale has an extensive portfolio, with notable performances including the role of Werner Von Croy in multiple Tomb Raider titles and Sherlock Holmes in The Testament of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments. He was also the writer for the video game Dog's Life. His work in radio drama and audiobook narration is highly acclaimed, having won a Sony Award as Best UK Radio Actor and an Audie Award for his reading of Slumdog Millionaire. While his contributions to anime are a minor part of a much broader career, his voice work in Maris the Chojo remains a noted entry for enthusiasts of English-dubbed anime from the 1980s.
