Yukiko Matsui
Description
Yukiko Matsui is a Japanese manga artist and novelist known for her work as an original creator for anime and manga properties, with credits spanning from the mid-1990s into the 2010s. Born on January 5, 1967, in Musashino, Tokyo, she studied at Kyoritsu Women's University. Her professional name in Japanese is written as 松井雪子, read in kana as まつい ゆきこ.
Matsui's career in anime began with the 1994 to 1995 television series Gakkou no Kowai Uwasa: Hanako-san ga Kita!!, a show centered on school ghost stories, where she was credited for original illustrations. Her most recognized credit as an original creator is for the 1998 television anime Haruba-Ke no Sanninme (titled Haruniwa-ke no Sanninme in some records), a 45-episode series with a nostalgic setting about a family whose youngest son is a spirit. This five-minute-per-episode series aired from January to March 1998. She also created the original manga for this work, which was published in 1997.
Her involvement with the Hanako-san franchise continued years later; for the 2010 sequel series Gakkou no Kowai Uwasa: Shin Hanako-san ga Kita!!, Matsui took on the role of character designer. This long-term association with a single franchise illustrates a recurring thread in her professional output, which includes a focus on children's and family-oriented supernatural content. Outside of anime production, her body of work includes original manga and novels, establishing her career across multiple facets of the Japanese publishing and animation industries.
