Ted Layman
Description
Ted Layman was the stage name of American actor Theodore Lehmann, who was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on July 26, 1922. He built a career in both live-action and voice acting, with his voice work contributing to several English-dubbed anime series that were distributed in the United States during the 1980s.
Layman's anime voice acting credits are primarily associated with the dubbing of series from that era. He is known for voicing the Narrator in the English adaptation of the anime series Grimm's Fairy Tales, a role he also performed for the subsequent series New Grimm's Fairy Tales. Another of his notable roles in the medium was providing the voice for the character Dr. Zero in the Space Pirate Captain Harlock television series, where he was credited as the second voice for the character.
His other credits in English-dubbed anime included the role of High Dingy Doo in Fushigi na Koala Blinky, Mayor in Maple Town Stories, and An-D2 (known as Clarence in some versions) in GoShogun. He also voiced the character An-D in the 1986 series Macron 1. These roles, often in supporting or character parts, placed him among the pool of voice actors who worked on bringing Japanese animation to English-speaking audiences through dubbing.
Beyond his anime voice work, Layman's acting career spanned several decades and included numerous appearances in live-action film and television from the late 1950s through the late 1980s. His live-action credits included small roles in the science-fiction film The Andromeda Strain, the television series Matlock, and the comedy film Under the Rainbow. He passed away on February 11, 2018, at the age of 95.
