Description
In a near-future where immersive virtual reality gaming has become the standard, high school student Rakuro Hizutome is an anomaly known as a crap-game hunter. He finds his greatest joy not in polished, state-of-the-art titles, but in conquering the glitch-ridden, poorly designed, and frustratingly broken games that others reject. After finally mastering one such flawed gem, a game store clerk suggests he try a different kind of challenge: Shangri-La Frontier, a god-tier VRMMO with thirty million players, renowned for its flawless design and vast, immersive world.

Entering the game as his avatar, a bird-masked player named Sunraku, he brings the skills and tenacity forged by years of enduring digital trash. True to his style, he skips the prologue and tutorial area, immediately setting off on his own path. His reckless exploration soon leads him to a nighttime encounter with Lycagon the Nightslayer, a giant black wolf and one of the seven Unique Monsters known as the Colossi, which no player has ever defeated. Sunraku is swiftly obliterated but survives, marked with Lycagon's Scar, a cursed brand that prevents him from equipping armor on most of his body.

This curse, however, unlocks an exclusive unique scenario. Following a mysterious vorpal bunny, Sunraku discovers Rabituza, a hidden city of rabbit-kin, a location unknown to the general player base. There, he befriends Emul, a cheerful and powerful young bunny who becomes his companion, and gains the respect of her father, Vysache, the city's yakuza-like boss who offers to train him. Sunraku's distinctive bird mask and cursed appearance, alongside his rare bunny companion, quickly make him a subject of fascination and rumor within the game.

The story expands as Sunraku reunites with two skilled rivals from previous trash games: the pro fighting game player Kei Uomi, who uses the female brawler avatar Oikatzo, and the ruthless strategist Towa Amane, whose player-killer persona is Arthur Pencilgon. Pencilgon convinces the group to challenge another of the Seven Colossi, Wethermon the Tombguard, an undead samurai eternally guarding the grave of a woman named Setsuna. The battle against Wethermon forms a major narrative arc, requiring meticulous preparation, the dismantling of Pencilgon's own PK clan, and culminates in a desperate, multi-stage fight. Their victory is a monumental achievement, marking them as true anomalies within Shangri-La Frontier.

Following this triumph, the trio founds their own clan, Wolfgang, dedicated to hunting the remaining six Colossi. Season two continues their journey, focusing on Sunraku's efforts to power up a unique piece of loot from Wethermon, the Ether Reactor, which involves training Emul's sister, Bilac, to become an ancient craftsman. The narrative also introduces new allies and rivals from other games, like the PvP specialists Rust and Mordo, and expands the world's lore through encounters with groups like the Library guild, while other major arcs involve returning to the "crap game" Nephilim Hollow and preparing for a major fighting game tournament known as the GGC. The series chronicles Sunraku's transformation of Shangri-La Frontier from a god-tier game into his next great challenge, proving that the skills of a dedicated trash game hunter are a unique and powerful force. A third season has been announced.
