Description
In the darkness of a cave, a man who has never seen even his own figure discovers a hollow flooded with light. This premise serves as the core of Trip!-Trap!, a 2005 Japanese animated short film directed by Mirai Mizue. Created as Mizue's graduation project at Tama Art University, the film features music composed by Alice Nakamura and contains no dialogue. The narrative unfolds through a rapid succession of fragmented images assembled in montage, with the director describing the work as a representation of his fragmented ideas during a period of creative uncertainty following his earlier film Fantastic Cells. The central character, the unnamed man in the cave, exists in a state of isolation and self-unknowing until the encounter with illumination transforms his circumstances. The setting remains abstract and confined to the cave environment, emphasizing thematic concerns with perception, discovery, and the nature of seeing. With a runtime of approximately five minutes and a G rating suitable for all ages, the film belongs to the avant-garde genre. The work was later included on the compilation DVD Mirai Mizue Works 2003-2010. The director has expressed particular fondness for the title, finding it exceptionally charming.
